When do I refer a student to CARES?
We encourage faculty, staff, students, and community members to refer a student to the CARES Team if they notice behaviors that may indicate a student is at risk or in distress. Examples of concerning behaviors include:
Academic
Sudden decline in grades or progress
Missing classes or failing to complete assignments, if unusual or out of character.
Emotional or Behavioral Concerns
Noticeable sadness, anxiety, withdrawal, or mood changes
Aggressive, disruptive, or hostile behavior
**Immediate safety concerns should be reported to the Campus Safety Office right away.
Social Concerns
Isolation from peers
Withdrawal from campus involvement or significant changes in communication
Safety Concerns
Direct or indirect statements suggesting self-harm or harm to others
**Immediate safety concerns should be reported to the Campus Safety Office right away.
Any Uncertainty
If you feel unsure – refer. It is okay to submit a referral as a precaution. Every report is reviewed by the CARES Team to determine the appropriate next steps.
