Program Overview

The Automotive Service Technology program is based on the Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation (ASE) standards. In our state-of-the-art lab, students practice and demonstrate competencies such as diagnosing and repairing engines, brakes, suspensions, and electronic systems as they study to become an automotive technician. This course prepares students to take several certification exams, including four ASE certification exams, the G1-General Technician for Maintenance and Light Repair certification exam, and the Vehicle Emissions Testing exam.

AUTO1111Advanced Brakes2$190 This course will outline advanced diagnostics and repair of automotive brake systems; to include antilock brakes. Additionally, this course reviews the knowledge necessary to successfully pass the ASE Brakes A5 Exam.
AUTO1115Suspension & Steering Service2$190 This course will introduce basic tire and wheel services, including tire puncture repairs, servicing of tire pressure monitoring systems, and servicing of suspension and steering components.
AUTO1002Advanced Suspension & Steering2$190 This advanced level course will cover vibration and wheel alignment diagnostic procedures. Students will also be introduced to electronic power steering assist systems and advanced alignment theory. In addition, students will practice replacing suspension components. Finally, this course reviews the knowledge necessary to successfully pass the ASE Suspension and Steering A4 Exam.
AUTO1007Electrical Fundamentals2$190 This course will cover the fundamentals of automotive electrical systems and introduce students to electrical theory, Ohms law, basic meter usage, wiring repair and troubleshooting techniques. Additionally, this course will introduce battery diagnosis and battery repair and starting and charging systems of vehicles.
AUTO1012Electrical Diagnostics2$190 This course will explore advanced vehicle body system electronics operations and diagnostics (e.g. horn, wiper, and motor accessories). This course will cover topics on advanced meter usage and lighting systems operation and diagnosis.
AUTO1017Engine Performance Basics2$190 This course covers basic ignition, fuel, induction, and exhaust systems. In addition, this course will explore diagnostic trouble codes, freeze frame data, OBD monitors, basic scan tool operations, and specific diagnostic tests such as noises, vacuum, power balance, compression and leak-down.
AUTO1022Advanced Engine Performance2$190 This course explores the process of diagnosing sensors and actuators using a scan tool and/or lab scope. In addition, this course covers precautions and basic servicing of hybrid/electric vehicles. Finally, this course reviews the knowledge necessary to successfully pass the Weber County Emission License test.
AUTO1027Engine In-Vehicle Repairs2$190 This course will explore different engine types, internal engine components, and will examine engine diagnosis and service as it relates to lubrication and cooling systems. In addition, this course covers engine assembly removal and installation with inspection of related components.
AUTO1032Engine Repair2$190 This course will cover proper measurement of engine pistons, cylinders, cranks, cams and valves through disassembly and reassembly of engine blocks and cylinder heads according to specifications. Additionally, the last part of the course reviews the knowledge needed to prepare for the ASE Engine Repair A1 Exam.
AUTO1037Automatic Transmissions2$190 This course covers basic automatic transmission services (e.g. fluid and filter change, and linkage inspections) and basic operation of automatic transmissions continuously variable transmissions. In addition, this course focuses on the diagnosis and service of automatic transmissions and transaxles hydraulic and electrical systems which are to include torque converter, planetary gear sets, multi-clutch packs, and transmission control solenoids.
AUTO1042Manual Transmissions2$190 This course will cover how to perform basic manual drive train and axle services such as clutch hydraulics, drive shafts, CV axles, and fluid change. In addition, this course will cover advanced level topics on diagnosis and repair of manual transmission internal components. This course will explore the operation and service of ring and pinion gears and differential assemblies.
AUTO1047HVAC Service2$190 This course will explore the principles of heating and air conditioning systems, as well as examination of interior air ducting systems. The course will set a standard for air conditioning diagnostics based on gauge readings and vent output temperatures. In addition, this course covers removal and installation of air conditioning components, such as compressors, lines, condensers and driers. As part of this course, students will be required to pass the EPA Section 609 Technician Certification test.
AUTO1052Advanced HVAC & Critical Workplace Skills2$190 This course will analyze diagnosis and operation of automatic climate controls and will review all the training necessary to successfully pass the ASE Heating and Air Conditioning A7. The last half of this course will develop essential workplace skills needed to maintain gainful and satisfying employment in the automotive industry. This will include exploring problematic areas found in the workforce including relationships and diversity, adapting to change, overcoming industry stereotypes, and personal responsibility. In addition, this course will cover topics on how to develop strong personal, interpersonal, and human relations skills, demonstrate proper communication skills, create a resume, and receive job interview guidelines.

Automotive Service Technology program is based on the Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation (ASE) standards and prepares students to take the following certification exams.

  • Vehicle Emissions Testing

In the state-of-the-art equipped lab, students practice and demonstrate competencies such as diagnosing and repairing engines, brakes, suspensions and electronic systems as they study to become an automotive technician.

Eric Rassi

Eric Rassi started his training at an early age in his high school automotive program and then went on to graduate from College of Marin in Automotive Technology. He has 18 Years hands-on experience with various dealerships and independent shops, and has been instructing for the last 6 years. Eric is ASE L1 and L3 certified, and has been master certified since 1997.
