Students Receive Rocky Mountain NASA Space Grants

The Rocky Mountain NASA Space Grant Consortium provided UTech colleges with funds for students enrolled in programs supportive of or related to aerospace. Ogden-Weber Technical College offers these types of programs to help prepare individuals for work in the aerospace industry.

Over 25 students applied for the stipends. A committee met and reviewed each application and selected four students for the awards. The judging criteria included the student’s attendance, progress, and career objective as noted in their essays.

Presentations were made on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, in the students’ program areas, and they were given a special certificate along with their stipend. The following students were recognized:

Caleb Mecham: Caleb is a great student who is always on time to class and always on task in class. He is a support to the Information Technology (IT) instructors and other students. Prior to enrolling in the IT Networking program, he performed two years of volunteer service work for his church demonstrating quality of character. Caleb began as a self-pay student and earned a tuition scholarship based on his achievements. He is now a working student building custom gun holsters to pay for textbooks and materials. He is a natural at information technology and looking forward to completing the A+ Certification soon. Caleb is a great asset to the program because he is goal-oriented, focused on success, and works hard to achieve.

Brett Osmonson: Brett is a dedicated student who is working toward obtaining information technology skill sets to build a career in the industry. Brett has a Bachelor’s Degree in Ceramic and is working to upgrade his skills. He is reliable and always on task with attendance and achievement, earning a tuition scholarship. He has great critical thinking and decision-making skills. The aerospace industry will provide him many opportunities to find career paths beginning in IT desktop support or IT specialist roles, and possibly systems analyst in the future.

Emily Zepeda: Emily is a dedicated and focused student who is always excited to come to class with a bright, cheerful, and never-say-never attitude. She has passion to work in the IT industry, preferably aerospace because as she puts it, “That’s where it’s at,” for a career. Her plan is to complete the IT Networking certificate so she can work in aerospace service desk support and find opportunities to grow from there into IT specialist positions and beyond. Emily is an asset to the program because of her desire to succeed.

Dellana Herrera: Dellana is a passionate and dedicated night student. She overcame some obstacles that might have slowed someone else down, and she rose to the occasion. She continually surprises her instructors with how adaptive, creative, and committed she is to learning new concepts. Dellana is always open to listen and offer advice to anyone who needs her perspective. Her programming skills continually improve due to her innate skills with problem solving.
