OGDEN, UT – At OTECH, students like Julia Piedra Santa are turning dreams into careers—thanks to hands-on training, and supportive instructors that made it all possible. A year ago, Julia returned to school to start her career, and today she’s thriving in the Automation Technology program, building confidence and gaining the skills that pay!
Julia began her OTECH journey in the Manufacturing Technology program, where she discovered how much she enjoyed hands-on work. The program didn’t just teach her technical skills—it showed her that she can do hard things.
When it was time to start the electrical systems course, Julia was nervous. Electricity seemed dangerous and intimidating! “There was a time that I was scared of doing this work,” Julia said. “But my instructor, Mike Tolson, saw that and asked me how I was doing. I told him I was scared, but he said, ‘Don’t be — it’s safe.’ and I felt better.” That moment of reassurance made all the difference. And with encouragement from her instructors, Julia’s confidence grew —along with her skills.

To students who might be unsure about learning a new skill or starting a new career, Julia offers this simple advice: “Don’t be scared and be confident. OTECH has made it easier for me than I thought. I didn’t think I was capable of doing this or going back to school — but now I feel confident”.
