Barbering

The barbering program is designed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles and hands on fundamentals associated with the barbering industry. Students learn shaving, mustache/beard design as well as cutting hair, using razors, shears and clippers. Special attention is given to hygiene, skin and scalp disorders, anatomy, sterilization and sanitation, and salon operation.

Students who complete the program will be qualified to take the Utah state licensing exam. A valid U.S. Social Security number and government-issued ID is required for licensure. See detailed information for non-U.S. citizens.

The Barbering program is designed to prepare students for employment in a salon/barber shop. Students in this program develop communication, professional behavior, and the core skills of working in a salon business. Students work with salon guests in a well-equipped salon and perform these skills with the newest techniques, products, and equipment in the industry. Students learn to communicate with customers, analyze hair, perform the duties of hair cutting, shaving, and facial hair design.

This program includes 1000 clock time hours of instruction as required by the State of Utah for licensure. Upon completion of the program, students are prepared to take the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology/Barbering Licensure, and examination required for licensure.



Program Objectives

 

The Barbering program objectives are prescribed by state statute and include:

  • Complete 1,000 clock hours
  • Perform barbering services on mannequins and public guests
  • Communicate effectively with salon guests and coworkers
  • Demonstrate communication through electronic, verbal, and written formats
  • Prepare for state board licensure examinations and licensing by the State of Utah
  • Orientation/Introduction consisting of history of barbering, science of barbering and overview of the curriculum
  • Demonstrate proper disinfection and sterilization procedures
  • Perform essential business management functions including developing a clientele, maintaining a professional image, developing professional associations, fostering positive public relations, and advertising
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the legal issues surrounding barbering including malpractice liability, regulatory agencies, and tax laws
  • Describe diseases and disorders of the hair and scalp including bacteriology, sanitation, sterilization, decontamination, and infection control
  • Demonstrate appropriate first aid
  • Define and explain the importance of anatomy and physiology, and histology to the barbering profession
  • Perform an analysis of and explain the properties of the hair and scalp
  • Explain the importance of chemistry for barbering
  • Demonstrate the safe use and maintenance of implements, tools, and equipment used in barbering
  • Perform basic hairstyling and haircutting including, draping, clipper variation scissor cutting and wet and thermal styling
  • Perform shaving, razor cutting, mustache and beard design

Licensure Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Complete a 1,000-hour Barbering program
  • Pass the state theory and practical examinations
  • Pay required fees to the Utah Department of Professional Licensing

Fred Martinez

Fred Martinez has been a licensed barber for 40 years and has been with Ogden-Weber Technical College for over 18 years. Fred is over the Barbering program. He instructs various techniques in barbering, men’s haircuts, facial shaves, etc.

Shawna Allen

Shawna has been licensed in the cosmetology field for over 20 years and has a passion for educating students. She is the program coordinator for cosmetology, barbering and nail tech. She was nominated for CEA Educator of the year and was the recipient of OTECH’s 2018 Presidents Exceptional Service Award. She has a desire to see students succeed and works to positively impact future professionals in the industry.

Teresa Taylor

Student Support Specialists are professionally trained and available for all students at the college. They are available to assist students who have questions regarding their program, progress and attendance, and program changes. The specialist can assist students with campus and program policies or procedures, student rights, as well as the policy and processes involved in student complaints. The student support specialist staff is also available to discuss personal/family matters, address emergency situations, and provide referrals to college and community services.

State Licensure
