Dental Assisting

Important Notice
All students must complete a Criminal Background Check and random drug screen. A social security number or Individual Tax Payer Identification Number (ITIN) is required for the background check. Any felony or misdemeanor conviction on record or positive drug screen may negatively impact students’ chances of completing the program and being placed at an externship site. There will be no tuition or fee refund for students who are unable to complete the program due to their criminal record or positive drug screen. Prospective students with a criminal record are strongly encouraged to contact the Program Coordinator, Dana Mace, at 801-627-8444 to discuss their record prior to enrolling in the program. Please note, many states including Utah, do not seal juvenile records. Any charge incurred in the last 7 years will show up on the background check.X

The Dental Assisting Program is designed to prepare for employment of the professional Chairside Assistant. Students focus on the basics of dental assisting, nutrition, dental prevention, dental disease, infection control, instruments and tray setups for dental procedures, dental materials, anatomy, radiology, dental specialties, law and ethics, CPR, and a clinical experience.



Program Objectives

  • Correlate the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, psychology, microbiology to the roles and responsibilities of a dental assistant.
  • Identify commonly used equipment, supplies, instrumentation, and medications used in the dental chairside setting.
  • Apply the principles of asepsis to the dental office and its environment.
  • Perform competently and safely the skills of a dental assistant.
  • Use legal, moral, and ethical principles to evaluate the care of a dental patient.
  • Demonstrate the professional attributes of a dental assistant.
  • Pass the final exam and certifications for the dental field.

Program Coordinator

Dana Mace

Dana is the Coordinator of the Dental Assisting Program. She is a graduate of the college program and has 15 years clinical dental assisting experience in private practice and in the Air Force Reserves. She has an Associates of Applied Science in Dental Assisting and is a member of the American Dental Assistants Association. As a former student, with her vivacious personality, zest for life and her enthusiasm for the college and the program, she wants to impart her skill set and fresh perspective to the dental assisting program.

Student support specialists are professionally trained and available for all students at the college. They are available to assist students who have questions regarding their program, progress and attendance, and program changes. The specialist can assist students with campus and program policies or procedures, student rights, as well as the policy and processes involved in student complaints. The student support staff is also available to discuss personal/family matters, address emergency situations, and provide referrals to college and community services.

Flexible Learning Model

Want to train as a dental assistant, but aren’t able to attend school full time? If you’ve got a busy life and need a program that will fit your schedule, our flexible learning model may be the answer. Readings, assignments and tests are available online and can be completed at home. Hands-on skills, like sterilizing instruments, taking x-rays or assisting during a filling, are scheduled on campus. Approximately 49% of the program can be completed at home, on your time frame. The remaining 51% covers clinical and lab skills that are taught in our state-of-the-art dental clinic.
