Most of our programs allow students to determine their own schedule by choosing the days and times they can attend. Certificate seeking students must schedule at least 12 hours per week, and we encourage students to schedule as many hours per week as possible to save time and money.
Competency-based training refers to a learning model where students must demonstrate the required level of knowledge and skill (competency) on a task prior to advancing to the next task. Each training program at Ogden-Weber Technical College is developed with the guidance of an Occupational Advisory Committee. These employers define the “competencies” students need to possess in their career field, and those competencies then form the course assignments and tasks each student must master to complete their certificate.
This means Ogden-Weber Technical College is about competency, not seat time. If you are a fast learner or already have some skills and knowledge in your chosen occupational area, you’ll be able to demonstrate your competence by successfully completing course assignments—hands-on projects, tests—and go faster.
In summary, competency-based training means you can learn and progress through courses based on a schedule you choose, and you’ll graduate with a certificate when you have mastered all the skills and competencies in a specific program.
No, students at Ogden-Weber Technical College are expected to maintain a pace of 67% progress while enrolled. Some sponsors/programs may have a higher standard than this so please check with your instructor. Your progress hours are determined by the hours of completed work, divided by the number of hours you are scheduled in a course.
Students in competency-based training must be self-directed, highly motivated, and comfortable learning independently. Successful students in competency-based training are skilled at:
Traditional Training | Competency-Based Training | |
---|---|---|
What is class like? | Faculty lead students in discussions, lectures and assignments during the class period. | Students work independently at their own pace throughout the time they are scheduled in a program. |
Assignments & Course Activity Deadlines | All students have the same due date on assignments per the course schedule. | Each student completes and submits assignments when they believe they have the knowledge and skill to do so. |
Classroom Interaction with Peers | Yes | Yes and No. Some course activities may involve students working in small groups to complete a task. This depends on the instructor. |
Time to Complete Program | Depends on the institution’s course schedule. | Depends on the student’s schedule and abilities. |
