VA Benefits Frequently Asked Questions

What are VA Education and Training Benefits?

VA Education and Training Benefits are financial assistance programs provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to help veterans, service members, and their dependents pay for education or training.

You can apply online through the VA’s website, or you can meet with OTECH’s Veterans Services Officer for assistance with completing the application.

Who is eligible for VA Education and Training Benefits?

Eligibility depends on factors such as military service, length of service, and the type of benefit being requested. Reach out to OTECH’s Veterans Services Officer if you have questions about eligibility.

How much funding can I receive through VA Education and Training Benefits?

The amount of funding depends on the specific benefit program, your eligibility, and your enrollment status. The Post-9/11 GI Bill, for example, may cover tuition, fees, and living expenses.

Students may use the GI Bill Comparison Tool to estimate benefits.

How many programs can I take at the college using my VA Education and Benefits?

Students may take as many programs as their eligibility allows and they are in good standing.

How long will it take before I receive my benefits?

It usually takes 4-6 weeks from your first attended day of class before you will receive payment from the VA for Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), books, and supplies.

What is required to be eligible for funding?

    • Certificate of Eligibility from the VA
      Military Training Record (JST, CCAF
        College transcripts (if any)

For Veteran’s Readiness and Employment, speak with your individual VA case worker.

What happens if I get overpaid or need to repay some funds?

Students who get overpaid must plan with the VA to repay their funding. Reach out the OTECH Veterans Services Officer for more details.

How do I calculate my academic performance?

Equation: (number of credits completed ÷ number of credits attempted = academic performance)

    7 credits completed ÷ 12 credits taken = 58%

    VA Education Benefit Rate

    • Full Time Students – schedule of (1 credit hours every week) = Full Time Benefits
