Medical Assistant

Medical assistants are trained to perform both administrative and clinical tasks in the outpatient setting. Clinical skills include preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, administering injections and medications, and assisting with minor surgical procedures.

Important Notice
All students must complete a Criminal Background Check and random drug screen. A social security number or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) is required to run a background check. Any felony or misdemeanor conviction that you have on your record or positive drug screen may negatively impact your chances of completing the program and being placed at an externship site. There will be no tuition or fee refund for students who are unable to complete the program due to their criminal record or positive drug screen. Prospective students with a criminal record are strongly encouraged to contact the Program Coordinator, Kelsee Grow, at 801-627-8445 to discuss their record prior to enrolling in the program. Please note, many states including Utah, do not seal juvenile records. Any charge incurred in the last 7 years will show up on the background check.X
Vaccination Information
This program has clinical, apprenticeship, or externship requirements. Some of our externship, clinical and apprenticeship partners are requiring students to receive the COVID-19 vaccine before student placement. Please speak with the program coordinator if you have any questions regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements.X
Clinic Scholarships

All eligible students can receive a scholarship when they meet the academic requirements in the Medical Assistant program. If funds are available, a portion of the scholarship may be from local clinics with some added benefits to the scholarship recipients:

  • When the student is ready for their externship (worksite experience course near the end of the MA program), the sponsoring clinic will have ‘first right of refusal’ to host the student at the clinic for the externship.
  • Up to $500 of the students scholarship will be supported by the clinic

Among the requirements for the scholarship are:

  • Enrollment in the Medical Assistant program
  • Maintain cumulative 80% progress and 80% attendance throughout the program
  • Agreement to complete the externship at the sponsoring clinic

All rules and requirements for scholarships are clarified at the time of application and acceptance; items listed here are subject to change

Funding for this portion of a scholarship can change during any part of the school year. The following clinics are currently offering this type of scholarship:

  • Midtown Community Health Center

Medical assistants are multi-skilled, allied health care professionals responsible for various clinical and/or administrative duties and are an essential part of a healthcare team. This program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions that will allow them to learn and move into higher-level job opportunities by working with physicians and providers in office settings. Students in this program learn cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains by focusing on administrative and back office clinical skills. Upon successful completion of all required courses, students participate in an externship in a medical office. Graduates of the program are eligible to take a national certification exam.

Program Objectives

  • Demonstrate competent patient care of a medical assistant in ambulatory healthcare facilities.
  • Exhibit basic skills of a medical assistant including: obtaining vital signs, phlebotomy, pharmacology, EKG, and assisting providers with specialty examinations.
  • Perform accurate medical documentation, patient education instruction, communication, and apply critical thinking skills in both simulated and clinical settings.
  • Describe the areas of general, clinical, and administrative medical assisting.
  • Demonstrate competencies and skills in preparation for taking a medical assistant national certification examination.
