Medical coding and billing specialists work in physicians’ offices, medical clinics, outpatient surgical centers and many other healthcare settings. The healthcare industry is continuously evolving making these career choices an excellent opportunity for successful entry into a long-term career in healthcare.
The Medical Coding and Billing program provides students with the technical skills and knowledge for an entry-level position in a health care setting through competency-based education.
All students in the Medical Coding and Billing program study medical terminology, anatomy, laws and ethics, standard medical billing and coding methods, medical coding software, and functions of the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Students develop administrative office skills, receive hands-on experience using a Medical EHR system to schedule, manage patient accounts, and enter patient documentation. The program prepares students to work as entry-level Medical Coder and/or Biller in a medical office, clinic, or hospital.
In addition, medical coding and billing specialists examine how to code diagnoses and procedures performed or identified by a physician. Students also explore how to process health insurance claims, examine coverage issues, and processes for billing and collections. Medical billing and coding specialists prepare to take the National Certified Professional Coding (CPC) examination through American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). There are other medical coding certification exams available including Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the Certified Medical Coder (CMC) offered by the Practice Management Institute (PMI).

Marilyn brings over 25 years of medical coding and billing experience to share with students in the Medical Coding and Billing program. She currently holds the credentials of RHIT, CPC, CPC-I, CRC and CPB. Her coding career has been focused primarily on pro-fee coding for Emergency Department and General Medicine, and also has experience in supervisory and management roles.
She has a passion for teaching and thrills to see students’ confidence expand as they grasp and apply coding and billing concepts! A physician once told her, “My coder is one of my very best and closest friends!”
Marilyn’s vision for the Medical Coding & Billing Specialist program is to train students with the skills necessary to assist healthcare providers in reporting patient diagnoses, procedures, and services accurately. Ultimately, to be a reliable “behind the scenes” friend to both physicians and patients while engaged in a fascinating career.

Student support specialists are professionally trained and available for all students at the college. They are available to assist students who have questions regarding their program, progress and attendance, and program changes. The specialist can assist students with campus and program policies or procedures, student rights, as well as the policy and processes involved in student complaints. The student support staff is also available to discuss personal/family matters, address emergency situations, and provide referrals to college and community services.

The Medical Coding and Billing program enables students to work in the healthcare field as medical coders, billers or claims specialists. Students learn to analyze and extract key information from medical records to assign accurate procedural and diagnostic codes to a claim for medical billing. Students acquire advanced understanding of medical coding concepts and guidelines using real-world medical scenarios, applying the universally recognized coding system for CPT, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS coding.
Students gain an extensive understanding of the healthcare coding and billing systems, medical law and ethics, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and professional communication. This knowledge enables graduates to assist providers, clinics and patients with medical coding and billing processes as they seek proper reimbursement from commercial insurance and different government entities.
After successful completion of the Medical Coding and Billing program, students are eligible and prepared to sit for the CPC (Certified Professional Coder) and CPB (Certified Professional Biller) exams through AAPC. These certifications are nationally recognized. The college will assist with certification expenses if students maintain required progress and attendance throughout their program.
