Nursing Assistant

As a valuable member of the healthcare team, certified nursing assistants (CNAs) work under the direction of a licensed nurse performing basic duties in a variety of settings including: long term care and assisted living facilities, hospitals, clinics, home health care and hospice. The OTECH Nursing Assistant program prepares students with the skills needed to obtain vital signs and assist patients with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, eating and toileting while focusing on safety, infection control and professionalism. Successful completion of the Nursing Assistant program qualifies the student to sit for the state certification exam.

Important Notice — Background Checks
All students must complete a Criminal Background Check application before enrollment in the Nursing Assistant program. A social security number or ITIN (Individual Tax Payer Identification Number) is required for the background check. Any felony or misdemeanor conviction on record may negatively impact students’ chances of completing the program and being placed at an externship site. There will be no tuition or fee refund for students who are unable to complete the program due to their criminal record. Prospective students with a criminal record are strongly encouraged to contact the Program Coordinator at 801-612-4179 to discuss their record prior to enrolling in the program. Please note, many states including Utah, do not seal juvenile records. Any charge incurred in the last 7 years will show up on the background check.X

Vaccination Information
This program has clinical, apprenticeship, or externship requirements. Some of our externship, clinical and apprenticeship partners are requiring students to receive the COVID-19 vaccine before student placement. Please speak with the program coordinator if you have any questions regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements.X

The Nursing Assistant program is designed for students to receive their certification by completing coursework in classroom and clinical settings.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of this program, students will have met all requirements set forth by the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR) and prepare them to sit for the required state exam which earns them the title of Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.). Students will:

  • Explain activities of daily living and nursing assistant scope of practice
  • Demonstrate correct recognizing and reporting, communication, infection control, safety, and residents' rights in the care setting
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all skills required for state certification
  • Perform nursing assistant skills in a healthcare setting
