Pharmacy Technician

A pharmacy technician assists the pharmacist in a retail or hospital setting to store, prepare, and dispense medicines. Responsibilities include inventory, ordering, labeling, storing, and distributing medicines, working with patient records, billing information, gathering information for the pharmacist, and the distribution of printed information to the patient.

Students who complete the program and pass a national certification exam will be eligible to apply for a Utah pharmacy technician license. A valid U.S. Social Security number and government-issued ID is required for licensure. See detailed information for non-U.S. citizens.

Important Notice
All students must complete a Criminal Background Check and random drug screen. A social security number or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) is required to run a background check. Any felony or misdemeanor conviction that you have on your record or positive drug screen may negatively impact your chances of completing the program and being placed at an externship site. There will be no tuition or fee refund for students who are unable to complete the program due to their criminal record or positive drug screen. Prospective students with a criminal record are strongly encouraged to contact the Program Coordinator at 801-627-8322 to discuss their record prior to enrolling in the program. Please note, many states including Utah, do not seal juvenile records. Any charge incurred in the last 7 years will show up on the background check.X
Vaccination Information
This program has clinical, apprenticeship, or externship requirements. Some of our externship, clinical and apprenticeship partners are requiring students to receive the COVID-19 vaccine before student placement. The Pharmacy Technician program prepares students to assist pharmacists in retail, hospital, and specialty pharmacy settings. Students will learn the skills needed to store, prepare, and dispense medications. Students will learn the knowledge necessary to assume responsibilities which include inventory management; ordering, labeling, storing, and distributing medications; working with patients records and billing information; gathering information for pharmacists, and distributing printed information to patients. Student will learn how to compound medications in a non-sterile and sterile setting. Students will learn how to administer immunizations according to DOPL protocol. High School students must be a minimum of 17 years old to enroll into the program and be turning 18 by the completion of the program. Successful completion of the program and the PTCE meets the requirements for state licensure.

Program Objectives

Pharmacy Technician Program objectives identify the skills and knowledge students demonstrate competency on throughout the duration of the program.  Upon completion of the program, knowledge and skills have been verified that students perform the specific entry-level skills required for the occupation, including:

  • Legal aspects of pharmacy practice such as laws and rules governing practice
  • Hygiene and aseptic technique
  • Terminology, abbreviations and symbols
  • Pharmaceutical calculations
  • Identification of drugs by trade and generic names, and therapeutic classifications
  • Filling of orders and prescriptions including packaging and labeling
  • Ordering, restocking, and maintaining drug inventory
  • Computer applications in the pharmacy
  • Over the counter products, including, but not limited to, cough and cold, nutritional, analgesics, allergy, diabetic, first aid, ophthalmic, family planning, foot, feminine hygiene, and gastrointestinal preparations.

Christina Stephens

Christina is the Coordinator for the Pharmacy Technician Program. She completed the Davis Technical College Pharmacy Technician Program in 2009 and has worked for 14 years as a Pharmacy Technician before becoming an instructor in 2018. Christina earned her advanced pharmacy technician certification in 2021. Christina has work experience in compounding, community and hospital pharmacy settings. She has a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a focus in healthcare management from Western Governors University.

Student support specialists are professionally trained and available for all students at the college.
