Phlebotomy

Phlebotomists are trained to perform the skills necessary to work in an in-patient and out-patient clinical setting. Students will study basic and advanced phlebotomy practices, specialized testing collections, as well as proper laboratory sample collection, handling, and processing procedures.

Important Notice
All students must complete a Criminal Background Check and random drug screen. A social security number or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) is required to run a background check. Any felony or misdemeanor conviction that you have on your record or positive drug screen may negatively impact your chances of completing the program and being placed at an externship site. There will be no tuition or fee refund for students who are unable to complete the program due to their criminal record or positive drug screen. Prospective students with a criminal record are strongly encouraged to contact the Program Coordinator, Kelsee Grow, at 801-627-8445 to discuss their record prior to enrolling in the program. Please note, many states including Utah, do not seal juvenile records. Any charge incurred in the last 7 years will show up on the background check.X
Vaccination Information
This program has clinical, apprenticeship, or externship requirements. Some of our externship, clinical and apprenticeship partners are requiring students to receive the COVID-19 vaccine before student placement. This program will provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to become competent phlebotomists. The program provides hands-on, competency-based technical education through classroom and laboratory instruction as well as hands-on practice. Lectures are given on basic and advanced phlebotomy, including the healthcare setting, overview of the human body, blood collection procedures, and special collection procedures. Laboratory skills being taught include:

Students have the opportunity to draw blood from classmates and volunteers. Upon completion students are eligible to take the National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. Graduates are able to work as a phlebotomist and use their phlebotomy skills in a variety of hospitals, care centers, clinics, and other healthcare settings.



Program Objectives

  • Identify laboratory, OSHA, hazardous material, blood borne pathogen exposures, warning symbols, infection control, and patient safety rules
  • Gain a basic understanding of the laboratory equipment and computer systems
  • Demonstrate basic terminology for the healthcare setting, understand and utilize correct order of draw and have basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology related to venipuncture
  • Draw blood correctly and safely from a patient by properly using equipment and supplies necessary while identifying and adjusting for any challenges associated with the venipuncture
  • Pass all final examinations, gain a certificate from the college and be eligible to take the National certification exam

Kelsee Grow
Kelsee Grow, M.Ed., CMA (AAMA)

Kelsee is the Coordinator of the Phlebotomy Program. She is a Certified Medical Assistant and an active member of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Her healthcare experience includes working in pediatrics, OB/GYN, and women's health, and family practice. Kelsee received her Bachelor of Integrated Studies in Health Administrative Services and Health Promotion, and a Master of Education in Instructional Design. Kelsee enjoys helping students pursue their goals in the health care community and looks forward to helping others find their passion in healthcare.

Student support specialists are professionally trained and available for all students at the college.
